Study Abroad Soars at PC
Thanks to a new policy that allows students to apply financial aid to study abroad, 229 students chose that option this year, an increase of 40 percent over the previous year. The number of countries increased as well, from 20 to 27, with students studying for the first time in Bolivia, Japan, Lebanon, and Morocco. Read more >

Classmates Rally for Peer
In 1982, Kenneth Douglass, Steve Duryea, and the rest of their classmates graduated from Providence College with bright futures ahead of them. But nearly 20 years later, in November 2000, the course of Douglass’ life took a devastating turn when he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. In April, Duryea and his classmates established the Kenneth Douglass Class of 1982 Scholarship, a scholarship that Douglass’ other close friends from the Class of ’82 and he are working to endow. Providence College’s student-run radio station, WDOM 91.3 FM, was ranked 11th in the nation recently in recognition of its efforts to increase accessibility to listeners. The ranking by the Princeton Review represents the results of mostly online responses of more than 122,000 students at the 376 institutions with student-run radio stations.

Mal Brown Dedication
On October 22, members of the National Alumni Association Greater Providence Area "Mal Brown" Club, including more than 35 alumni and their families, gathered together at St. Dominic Chapel to remember Mal Brown. He is buried in Amherst, MA without a headstone and through generous contributions by alumni, the Club was able to purchase one to place at his grave site. Read more.

Friar 5k Breaks Records
The second annual Friar 5K and Friar Fanfest at Providence College on October 22 proved to be a record-setting success. Held under cool, sun-splashed conditions, the Friar 5K set records for fund-raising and participation. The race raised more than $12,000 for the PC Fund, more than $2,500 above last year’s total, and drew 814 participants. Read more.

Brooks '11 Selected In NBA Draft
Former Providence College guard Marshon Brooks was selected in the first round (25th overall) of the 2011 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets on Thursday, June 23. He was then traded from the Celtics to the New Jersey Nets for the Nets first round pick at No. 27. The last Friar selected in the first round of the NBA Draft was Austin Croshere who was selected 12th Overall by the Indiana Pacers in 1997. Read more.

Senior Giving Program Surpasses 2010 Record in Participation
The Class of 2011 distinguished itself by setting a participation rate record in the Senior Giving Program. The 60% participation rate bested the previous mark of 58% by the Class of 2010. To date, the Class of 2011 campaign has raised more than $35,000. Read more.

A Night in Black and White Raises $450K
PC’s second annual A Night in Black and White was an off-the-charts affair in spirit, participation, and generosity. Held on April 9 at the expansive, 33rd-floor State Room overlooking Boston Harbor, A Night in Black and White attracted 750 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, corporate partners, and friends, and raised approximately $450,000, making it the largest single-event fund-raiser in College history. Ratzenberger Named Commencement Speaker

Cooley Named Men's Basketball Head Coach

Phone-a-Friar student caller surpasses $300k raised for PC
Maddie Hanonik ’11 is a marketing major and sociology minor from Paris, France and graduating this May with honors. She participates in intramural basketball, and is a key member of our Phone-a-Friar team of student callers. As of February 1, Maddie secured more than 1,160 pledges, raising over $300,000 for PC in her 3 years of working for the Program. Gifts to PC make a difference in the lives of students and faculty, in the classrooms, and on our courts, fields, and ice. This is the most raised by a student caller in the College’s history.

Alumnus, Two Family Members Killed
We are sorry to share with you the tragic news that Providence College alumnus Michael J. Ferguson '88 was one of three family members who died in a single-engine plane crash in Fairfield, N.J., on Monday evening, July 5. More than 450 Providence College alumni, parents, corporate partners, faculty, staff and friends attended the College’s inaugural fundraising event, A Night in Black and White on April 24, 2010 at the State Room in Boston, MA. This event brought in more than $300,000 with proceeds going to the PC Fund.
