New Humanities Building
Fortified by a major gift from a prominent alumnus and his wife, Providence College will begin construction on an academic building devoted to the humanities in spring 2012. The new building will be called the Ruane Center for the Humanities in recognition of the leadership gift made by Board of Trustees’ chair Michael A. Ruane ’71 and his wife, Elizabeth.

Freshman Family Weekend
Jonathan Safron Foer, who wrote the book that every Providence College freshman was encouraged to read during the summer, spoke to students in person at Freshman Family Weekend, urging them to embrace the challenge “Don’t change. Change,” on their college journey.
About 75 alumni parents and prospective students were able to launch their own college search processes at “Legacy Admission Information Day,” learning from Providence College experts how to apply for admission and financial aid while also enjoying a campus visit.
Classmates Rally for Peer
In 1982, Kenneth Douglass, Steve Duryea, and the rest of their classmates graduated from Providence College with bright futures ahead of them. But nearly 20 years later, in November 2000, the course of Douglass’ life took a devastating turn when he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. In April, Duryea and his classmates established the Kenneth Douglass Class of 1982 Scholarship, a scholarship that Douglass’ other close friends from the Class of ’82 and he are working to endow.

Students Sold on Value of Internships
All Providence College students are encouraged to hold internships. Career development takes place both inside and outside the classroom, and recruiters look for internships on student résumés.
